Booking.com Cover Photo: a 10-Minute Checklist

Part of the guide Hotel Media Library: Best Practices for Brands and Independent Hotels

The thumbnail decides the click. Open Booking on your phone, compare three competitors, and tick this list. Fail three items and the cover is costing you bookings.

On Booking.com guests do not “read” your hotel: they scan thumbnails. The cover is the filter. If you lose there, the rest of the photos, the copy, and even a better product do not matter.

This checklist fits in 10 minutes. Phone, three similar-price competitors in the same destination, real dates. No jargon, no endless audit.

How to run it

  1. Open Booking.com on your phone (not on a desktop).
  2. Search your destination with typical selling dates.
  3. Find your listing in the results grid — not inside the gallery.
  4. Note the three similar-price hotels next to you.
  5. Compare thumbnails: does yours stop the scroll or get skipped?

Cover checklist (yes / no)

  • In 1 second, is the hotel type clear (beach, city, rural, design…)?
  • Is it sharp on mobile, without a bad crop or empty sky eating the frame?
  • Is it landscape and high enough resolution (not an Instagram crop)?
  • Does it show the strongest promise — not “the photo we had handy”?
  • Does it win or tie visually against the 3 hotels next to you?
  • Does it match what you actually sell (not a zone guests barely use)?
  • Is it current (renovation, season, branding)?
  • When you open the listing, do the next 2–3 photos confirm that promise?

Three or more “no”: the cover is a leak. Change it today, even if the rest of the gallery waits.

What to change today (no new shoot)

  • Pick from your archive the frame that reads best as a mobile thumbnail, not the most “artistic” one.
  • Avoid empty reception, a corridor, or an abstract detail as the cover.
  • If you have two strong options, test the one that differentiates you from the three next door.
  • Align website and Instagram with the same promise (not necessarily the same photo — the same hotel).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Booking.com cover photo?

It is the main listing photo: the thumbnail in search results and the first image guests see when they open the property. If it does not stop the thumb, the rest of the gallery arrives too late.

Can I improve clicks by changing only the cover?

Often yes. It is the cheapest change with some of the highest impact. It does not replace a strong gallery, but a weak cover can sink a decent product.

Does the cover have to be the façade?

No. It has to be the strongest commercial promise on mobile: pool, views, terrace, design — whatever differentiates you from the three hotels next to you. A generic façade rarely wins.

Does the cover stop the scroll — or are you not sure?

In advisory we review your listing on mobile against competitors and tell you what to change first. If it fits, we make it operational in SeeSuites.
